Burdock root is one of those quietly remarkable herbs that serious herbalists keep coming back to — earthy, deeply nourishing, and with a history of use that spans continents. It has been a staple of traditional Japanese cuisine (gobo), a cornerstone of European folk herbalism, and a foundational herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries. Bitter, slightly sweet, and unmistakably rooty — Arctium lappa is the kind of herb that rewards consistent, long-term use.

Our burdock root is certified organic, cut and sifted — earthy and aromatic, with the characteristic dense, fibrous texture and mild bitterness that signals a root rich in inulin, mucilage, and bitter compounds.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Liver & detoxification support — one of the most classic liver herbs in Western and TCM traditions; traditionally used as a gentle bitter tonic to support healthy liver function and the body's natural detoxification pathways; a foundational herb in traditional cleansing and depurative formulas
  • Skin wellness — long used in European folk herbalism for skin clarity and complexion support; traditionally associated with the liver-skin connection; a key herb in traditional preparations for chronic skin conditions
  • Lymphatic support — a traditional lymphatic herb; historically used to support healthy lymph flow and the body's natural clearing processes
  • Digestive wellness — rich in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports healthy gut flora; traditionally used as a digestive bitter and gut tonic; supports healthy digestion and elimination with consistent use
  • Antioxidant & nutritive support — rich in quercetin, luteolin, and phenolic acids; a deeply nutritive root with well-documented antioxidant properties; traditionally used as a nourishing tonic herb

How to Use

As a tea (decoction): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of burdock root in 8–10 oz of water for 15–20 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Earthy, mildly bitter, and warming — best enjoyed plain or with a touch of raw honey. Drink 1–3 cups daily for best results with consistent use.

Tincture: Burdock root tinctures well in 40–60% alcohol. Macerate 6–8 weeks, shaking daily. Dose: 2–4 ml, 2–3x daily. A classic liver and skin tincture with excellent blending versatility.

Culinary (Gobo): Burdock root (gobo) is a beloved vegetable in Japanese cuisine — slice thinly and sauté, add to soups and stews, or pickle. Earthy, slightly sweet, and deeply satisfying. One of the few apothecary herbs that is equally at home in the kitchen.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with dandelion root and yellow dock for a liver and detox blend; with red clover and cleavers for a lymphatic formula; with nettle and red raspberry leaf for a nutritive tonic tea; or with milk thistle and schisandra for a comprehensive liver support blend.
