Fenugreek Seed (Organic)
Fenugreek is one of the oldest cultivated plants on earth. Seeds have been found in Egyptian tombs dating to 1500 BCE, and it has been a staple of Ayurvedic, traditional Chinese, and Middle Eastern medicine for thousands of years. It is a kitchen herb, a medicinal herb, and a functional food all at once — one of those rare botanicals that has never gone out of use because it has never stopped being useful. Warm, slightly bitter, with a distinctive maple-like aroma that makes it as recognizable in the spice cabinet as it is in the apothecary.
Our fenugreek is certified organic whole seed — golden-brown, dense, and richly aromatic with that characteristic warm, slightly bitter, maple-adjacent scent that herbalists and cooks alike have prized for millennia. Trigonella foenum-graecum — from the Latin for "Greek hay," a nod to its ancient Mediterranean roots and its long history as both fodder and medicine.
A note on preparation: fenugreek seed can be used whole, lightly crushed, or ground depending on the application. For tea, lightly crush or grind before steeping to improve extraction. Soaking overnight softens the seeds and reduces bitterness.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Healthy blood sugar balance — fenugreek's most researched modern use; rich in soluble fiber and steroidal saponins; traditionally used to support healthy glucose metabolism and insulin sensitivity as part of a balanced diet and lifestyle
- Digestive support — a classic digestive bitter and carminative; traditionally used to support healthy digestion, ease bloating and gas, and stimulate digestive secretions; the mucilaginous fiber soothes and coats the digestive tract
- Lactation support — one of the most widely used galactagogue herbs in traditional medicine worldwide; traditionally used to support healthy milk production in nursing mothers
- Hormonal and reproductive wellness — traditionally used to support healthy testosterone levels in men and hormonal balance in women; a key herb in traditional formulas for reproductive vitality and libido
- Inflammation support — traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response; the saponins and flavonoids contribute to its long history of use as a general wellness tonic
- Nutritive support — exceptionally rich in protein, iron, magnesium, and B vitamins; traditionally used as a nourishing tonic herb for overall vitality and strength
How to Use
As a tea: Lightly crush 1–2 teaspoons of fenugreek seed and steep in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Warm, slightly bitter, with a distinctive maple-like sweetness. A small amount of honey softens the bitterness beautifully.
Overnight soak: Soak 1 teaspoon of whole seeds in 8 oz of water overnight. Drink the water and eat the softened seeds in the morning. A traditional Ayurvedic preparation for digestive and metabolic support.
Culinary use: Fenugreek seed is a staple spice in Indian, Middle Eastern, and North African cooking. Lightly toast whole seeds before grinding to develop a richer, more complex flavor. Use in curries, spice blends, and pickles.
Blending: Pairs well with cinnamon and gymnema for a blood sugar support blend, fennel and ginger for digestive formulas, or blessed thistle and red raspberry leaf for lactation support teas.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, whole fenugreek seed retains its potency and aroma for 2–3 years.
Not recommended during pregnancy — fenugreek has uterine-stimulating properties and should be avoided during pregnancy. Those managing blood sugar with medications should consult their healthcare provider before use, as fenugreek may enhance the effects of diabetes medications.
