Hibiscus is the herb that stops people in their tracks. That color — a deep, jewel-like crimson that blooms instantly in hot water — is unlike anything else in the apothecary. Tart, bright, and refreshingly complex, with a flavor that sits somewhere between cranberry and pomegranate and a fragrance that is unmistakably floral. It is as beautiful to look at as it is to drink, and it has been beloved across cultures from West Africa to Mexico to the Middle East for centuries.

Our hibiscus is certified organic, tea cut, and sourced for color and flavor intensity. Deep burgundy-red calyces with that characteristic sharp, fruity tartness and rich floral aroma. Hibiscus sabdariffa — the true medicinal and culinary hibiscus, not an ornamental variety. Naturally caffeine-free and vibrantly alive.

How Hibiscus Has Been Traditionally Enjoyed

  • Cardiovascular wellness tradition — hibiscus has been used in traditional herbal practices across West Africa, Mexico, and Ayurveda as part of a heart-healthy lifestyle
  • Rich in anthocyanins — that stunning deep red color is a direct indicator of the same pigment compounds found in blueberries and pomegranates
  • Traditional cleansing botanical — enjoyed in African and Ayurvedic herbal traditions as a revitalizing, cleansing herb
  • Digestive & hydration ritual — traditionally enjoyed as a refreshing, hydrating botanical beverage; a staple of warm-climate herbal traditions worldwide
  • Naturally vitamin C rich — a bright, tart botanical naturally high in vitamin C and bioflavonoids
  • Culinary & beverage tradition — one of the most versatile culinary botanicals; the base of agua de jamaica, craft shrubs, mocktails, and herbal syrups worldwide

How to Use

As a hot tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of tea cut hibiscus in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 5–10 minutes. The color blooms immediately — a stunning deep ruby red. Tart and bright; sweeten with honey or agave to balance. Pairs beautifully with rose hips, ginger, cinnamon, or mint.

As an iced tea or cold brew: Hibiscus is exceptional cold. Cold brew overnight in the refrigerator for a smoother, less astringent flavor. Serve over ice with a squeeze of lime for a stunning agua de jamaica — the classic Mexican hibiscus agua fresca.

Culinary: Use to make hibiscus syrup for cocktails, mocktails, lemonades, and desserts. Infuse into vinegar for a vibrant salad dressing. Add to jams, jellies, and sorbets for color and flavor. One of the most versatile culinary botanicals in the apothecary.

Tincture: Macerate in high-proof alcohol for 4–6 weeks. Pairs well with hawthorn berry and rose hips for a traditional heart-supportive formula.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, dried hibiscus retains its color, flavor, and potency for 1–2 years.
