Marshmallow root is one of those herbs that sounds almost too simple — a plant named after a candy, with a mechanism so straightforward it barely seems medicinal. And yet it has been a cornerstone of the Western herbal apothecary for thousands of years, used in ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome for the same reason herbalists reach for it today: nothing soothes quite like mucilage. When you understand what marshmallow root actually does, you stop wondering why it's been around this long and start wondering why it isn't in everything.

Our marshmallow root is certified organic, cut and sifted — carefully processed to preserve its naturally high mucilage content, the polysaccharide-rich gel that becomes thick and coating when hydrated. Mildly sweet, earthy, and smooth. Althaea officinalis — from the Greek altho, meaning "to heal." The name has always been honest.

A note on this herb: marshmallow root is one of the few herbs where cold infusion is strongly preferred over hot brewing. Heat degrades the mucilage — the very compound that makes this herb work. We'll tell you exactly how to do it right.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Digestive comfort — traditionally used to soothe and coat the digestive tract, supporting comfort and recovery from everyday digestive stress
  • Respiratory wellness — traditionally used for dry, irritated airways, dry cough, and throat comfort; the mucilage coats and calms respiratory tissue
  • Urinary tract comfort — one of the premier urinary soothing herbs in Western herbalism; traditionally used to support comfort and healthy urinary flow
  • Skin soothing — used topically as a poultice or wash for dry or irritated skin; the mucilage is as effective externally as internally
  • Overall mucosal support — wherever the body has mucous membranes, marshmallow root has traditionally been used to support and protect them

How to Use

Cold infusion (strongly recommended): Add 1–2 tablespoons to 8 oz of cold or room temperature water. Let sit 8–12 hours — overnight works perfectly. Strain and drink. The resulting liquid will have a slightly thick, silky quality. That's the mucilage. That's exactly what you want.

Hot infusion: Steep in hot water for 15–20 minutes if cold infusion isn't practical. Still beneficial — just less mucilage preserved.

Blending: Marshmallow root is a natural team player. It enhances and softens almost any blend it joins — pairs beautifully with mullein and peppermint for respiratory support, ginger and fennel for digestive blends, and nettle and cleavers for urinary wellness teas. Its mild, slightly sweet flavor adds body and smoothness without overpowering other herbs.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted marshmallow root retains its potency for 1–2 years.

An important note on timing: Due to its mucilage content, marshmallow root may slow the absorption of medications. Allow at least 1–2 hours between taking marshmallow root and any prescription or OTC medications.
