Mugwort, Cut & Sifted (Organic)
Mugwort is the herb of the threshold — the liminal space between waking and dreaming, between the everyday world and something older and stranger. It has been burned, brewed, and tucked beneath pillows across cultures for thousands of years: by Chinese physicians practicing moxibustion, by European cunning folk protecting travelers, by dreamworkers seeking vivid, intentional sleep. It is one of the most storied herbs in the entire apothecary, and one of the most misunderstood. Real mugwort, properly sourced, is something worth knowing.
Our mugwort is certified organic, cut and sifted, with that characteristic silvery-green leaf and the distinctive earthy, slightly bitter, artemisia aroma that tells you immediately this is the real thing. Artemisia vulgaris — the mother of herbs, as it has been called across European folk tradition.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Dream work & vivid dreaming — mugwort's most celebrated modern use; traditionally placed beneath pillows, burned as incense, or brewed as a light evening tea to support vivid, memorable, and intentional dreaming; widely used in lucid dreaming practices
- Relaxation & nervous system support — a gentle bitter nervine; traditionally used to ease tension, calm an overactive mind, and support restful sleep
- Digestive support — a classic bitter herb; traditionally used to stimulate digestive secretions, ease bloating, and support healthy digestion, particularly after rich or heavy meals
- Menstrual support — used across European and Asian herbal traditions as an emmenagogue to support healthy menstrual flow and ease cramping; not for use during pregnancy
- Moxibustion — dried mugwort is the traditional material used in Chinese medicine moxibustion therapy, burned near acupuncture points to warm and stimulate
How to Use
Dream pillow: Tuck a small muslin bag filled with dried mugwort beneath your pillowcase before sleep. One of the oldest and most traditional uses — no brewing required. Combine with lavender and rose petals for a beautiful, aromatic sleep sachet.
As a tea: Steep 1 teaspoon of cut & sifted mugwort in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 5–7 minutes, covered. Earthy, slightly bitter, and deeply aromatic. Keep the dose gentle — mugwort is potent. A light cup in the evening is the traditional approach for dream support.
Smoke blend / incense: Burn dried mugwort as loose incense or blend with other herbs for a traditional smudging or ritual smoke preparation. The aroma is distinctive — earthy, slightly sweet, and unmistakably artemisia.
Infused oil: Cover with a light carrier oil and infuse for 4–6 weeks. Traditionally used as a topical preparation for muscle tension and joint comfort.
Moxibustion: The traditional Chinese medicine application — consult a trained practitioner for proper technique.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut & sifted mugwort retains its potency and aroma for 1–2 years.
