Nettle root has a long history in European herbal tradition, distinct from the more widely known nettle leaf. While the leaf is celebrated for its nutritive and allergy-supportive properties, the root has been the focus of a different body of traditional use — one centered on male health, urinary wellness, and hormonal balance. Quietly powerful and deeply grounding, nettle root is one of those herbs that rewards the patient herbalist who looks beyond the obvious.

Our nettle root is certified organic, cut and sifted from the thick, fibrous root of Urtica dioica — carefully dried and processed to preserve its active constituents. Earthy and mild, it blends well into teas and tinctures. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: nettle root is most commonly prepared as a decoction (simmered tea) or tincture. It is a slow-acting tonic herb best used consistently over time rather than as an acute remedy.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Male urinary and prostate health — nettle root's most well-known traditional use; historically used in European herbalism to support healthy urinary flow and male urinary comfort; one of the most studied herbs for male urinary comfort and healthy urinary flow
  • Hormonal balance — traditionally used to support healthy testosterone metabolism; nettle root contains compounds that interact with sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), which may support healthy free hormone levels
  • Joint and inflammatory comfort — traditionally used in European herbalism to support healthy inflammatory response; often combined with other anti-inflammatory herbs for joint comfort formulas
  • Urinary tract wellness — traditionally used to support healthy kidney and urinary tract function; a classic herb in European urinary tonic formulas

How to Use

As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted nettle root in 8–10 oz of water for 20–30 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. Mild and earthy — pairs well with saw palmetto, pygeum, or dandelion root for a comprehensive urinary tonic blend.

As a tincture base: Nettle root extracts well in alcohol. Use a 1:5 ratio in 40–60% alcohol for a standard tincture preparation.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with saw palmetto and pygeum for male health formulas, dandelion root and cleavers for urinary support blends, or turmeric and ginger for inflammatory comfort formulas.
