Oatstraw is the herb that the nervous system has been waiting for. Not dramatic, not fast-acting, not the kind of herb that announces itself — oatstraw works the way deep nourishment always works, slowly and completely, rebuilding what stress and depletion have worn away. It is one of the great trophorestorative herbs in the Western apothecary, which is a word that means it doesn’t just calm the nervous system — it feeds it. Rich in calcium, magnesium, silica, and B vitamins, oatstraw has been used for centuries as a long-term tonic for people who are depleted, exhausted, and running on empty. In a world that runs on cortisol, oatstraw is the antidote.

Our oatstraw is certified organic, cut and sifted from the green aerial parts of Avena sativa — harvested before the grain forms, at the milky oat stage when the nervine and nutritive compounds are at their peak. Gently grassy, faintly sweet, with a clean, mild flavor that makes it one of the most pleasant daily tonic herbs available. Avena sativa — the same plant as your morning oats, and one of the most deeply nourishing herbs in the apothecary.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Nervous system nourishment — oatstraw’s defining use in Western herbalism; a true trophorestorative nervine that feeds and rebuilds the nervous system over time; traditionally used for nervous exhaustion, burnout, depletion, and long-term stress; works best with consistent daily use over weeks and months
  • Stress & anxiety support — a gentle, non-sedating nervine; traditionally used to ease anxiety, nervous tension, and irritability without causing drowsiness; supports calm, grounded energy throughout the day
  • Sleep support — traditionally used as an evening tonic to support restful sleep, particularly for people whose insomnia is rooted in nervous system depletion and exhaustion rather than acute stress
  • Mineral & nutritive support — exceptionally rich in bioavailable calcium, magnesium, silica, and B vitamins; one of the most nutritive herbs available; traditionally used to support bone health, hair and nail strength, and overall mineral status
  • Hormonal & reproductive support — used in Western herbalism as a nourishing tonic for hormonal balance, particularly during perimenopause and menopause; the mineral content supports the nervous system changes that accompany hormonal transitions
  • Cognitive support — traditionally used to support mental clarity, focus, and memory, particularly in cases of mental fatigue and nervous depletion; a classic herb for students and anyone doing sustained mental work

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 tablespoons of oatstraw in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered — or simmer gently for 20 minutes for a richer, more mineral-dense infusion. Gently grassy, faintly sweet, and deeply mild. Naturally caffeine-free. Oatstraw is one of the few herbs that genuinely benefits from a longer steep — the minerals extract slowly and the longer you brew it, the more nourishing it becomes.

Nourishing herbal infusion: For maximum mineral extraction, steep 1 oz (about 1 cup loosely packed) of oatstraw in a quart of just-boiled water in a covered jar for 4–8 hours or overnight. Strain and drink throughout the day. This is the Susun Weed method — deeply nourishing, mineral-rich, and one of the most effective ways to use oatstraw as a long-term tonic.

Blending: Oatstraw pairs beautifully with nettle for a classic mineral-rich nourishing blend, lemon balm and chamomile for a gentle stress and sleep formula, or rose petals and milky oats for a deeply restorative nervine tonic.

Tincture: Best tinctured fresh as milky oats for maximum nervine potency — dried oatstraw tinctures are less potent but still useful as a mineral and tonic preparation.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut oatstraw retains its nutritive properties and mild flavor for 1–2 years.
