Saw Palmetto is one of the most researched and widely respected herbs in the Western herbal tradition — and one of the few that has earned genuine recognition in both traditional folk medicine and modern clinical research. A low-growing fan palm native to the coastal plains and pine flatwoods of the southeastern United States, Serenoa repens has been used by the indigenous peoples of Florida and the Gulf Coast for centuries as a food, a tonic, and a medicine. The berries — small, dark, and rich in fatty acids and phytosterols — are the medicinal part, and they have become one of the most popular herbal supplements in the world for men's and women's hormonal and urinary wellness.

Our Saw Palmetto is whole dried berries — Serenoa repens, carefully dried to preserve their fatty acid and phytosterol content. Dark reddish-brown to black, with a distinctive earthy, slightly fruity aroma. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: Saw Palmetto berries are rich in fat-soluble compounds, which means they are best extracted in alcohol (tincture) or oil rather than water alone. A water decoction will provide some benefit but will not fully extract the fatty acids that are considered the primary active constituents. For maximum benefit, many herbalists prefer a tincture or standardized extract. That said, a traditional decoction is a time-honored preparation and a meaningful way to work with this plant.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Prostate and urinary wellness (men) — Saw Palmetto's most celebrated use; traditionally used to support healthy prostate size and function, healthy urinary flow, and overall male urinary tract wellness; one of the most researched herbs for men's hormonal health
  • Hormonal balance and DHT support — traditionally used to support healthy hormone metabolism in both men and women; the fatty acids in Saw Palmetto are believed to support healthy DHT levels, making it relevant for both prostate wellness and hair and skin health
  • Hair and scalp wellness — increasingly popular in both men's and women's wellness for supporting healthy hair growth and scalp vitality; traditionally associated with hormonal hair wellness
  • Women's hormonal wellness — used in traditional Western herbalism to support healthy hormonal balance in women, particularly in the context of androgen-related concerns such as PCOS; pairs well with spearmint and nettle root in women's hormonal formulas
  • Libido and vitality support — traditionally used as a tonic herb for overall vitality and reproductive wellness in both men and women

How to Use

As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of whole dried Saw Palmetto berries in 8–10 oz of water for 20–30 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. Earthy and slightly bitter — pairs well with nettle root, spearmint, or licorice root.

As a tincture base: Whole dried berries can be used to prepare a traditional folk tincture in high-proof alcohol (menstruum of at least 60% alcohol recommended to extract fat-soluble constituents).

Blending: Pairs beautifully with nettle root and pygeum for a classic men's prostate support formula, spearmint and nettle root for a women's hormonal wellness blend, or ashwagandha and eleuthero for a men's vitality and energy formula.
