Schisandra Berry, Whole (Organic)
Schisandra is one of the most fascinating herbs in the entire materia medica — and one of the few that genuinely earns the word "adaptogen" in the classical sense. Known in Traditional Chinese Medicine as Wu Wei Zi, meaning "five flavor fruit," schisandra is said to embody all five flavors simultaneously: sour, sweet, salty, bitter, and pungent. This is not poetic license — it is a literal description of the berry's complex, layered taste, which reflects the remarkable breadth of its chemistry. In TCM, an herb that contains all five flavors is considered to act on all five organ systems. Schisandra has been used as a tonic herb for over 2,000 years, prized for building deep vitality, supporting the mind, and strengthening the body's resilience against stress.
Our schisandra is certified organic whole berry — the dried whole fruit of Schisandra chinensis, carefully sourced and packed to preserve its lignans, schisandrins, and essential oils. Small, dark reddish-purple, and wrinkled, with that unmistakable complex flavor that surprises first-time users every time. Certified organic and packed to order in small batches.

How to Use
As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of whole schisandra berries in 8–10 oz of water for 15–20 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. The flavor is genuinely complex — tart, slightly sweet, bitter, and warming all at once. Pairs beautifully with astragalus, goji berry, and a touch of honey for a classic TCM tonic tea.
Tincture: Schisandra tinctures beautifully in moderate to high-proof alcohol, which extracts the lignans and essential oils effectively. Lightly crush berries before macerating to improve extraction. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle.
Blending: A classic pairing with astragalus and reishi for a comprehensive adaptogen formula. Also combines beautifully with rhodiola for stress and endurance blends, or with milk thistle and dandelion root for liver support formulas.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, whole schisandra berries retain their potency for 2–3 years.
Not recommended during pregnancy. Those taking medications metabolized by the liver (CYP450 pathway) should consult their healthcare provider before use, as schisandra may affect drug metabolism.
