Usnea Lichen (Wildcrafted)
Usnea is not quite a plant, not quite a fungus — it is something older and stranger than either. A lichen, which is to say a symbiotic partnership between a fungus and an alga, usnea has been growing on the bark of trees in old-growth forests for hundreds of millions of years. It is one of nature's most patient organisms, growing only a few millimeters per year, accumulating its chemistry slowly and deliberately over decades. Herbalists have prized it for centuries as one of the great antimicrobial herbs of the forest — a remedy that asks you to slow down, pay attention, and respect what the wild has to offer.
Our usnea is wildcrafted whole thallus — the pale grayish-green stringy filaments of Usnea spp., carefully harvested from wild forest trees and dried to preserve its usnic acid, polysaccharides, and bitter compounds. Distinctly earthy and resinous, with the unmistakable character of old forest air. Wildcrafted herbs carry the full complexity of their natural environment — a depth that cultivated sources cannot replicate. Harvested sustainably in small quantities.
A note on preparation: usnea's primary active compound, usnic acid, is not water-soluble and does not extract well in plain hot water. Tincturing in high-proof alcohol is the most effective preparation method. Cold or room-temperature water extraction is not recommended.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Immune support and natural defense — usnea's most celebrated use in Western herbalism; traditionally used to support the body's natural immune defenses; usnic acid has been the subject of significant modern research for its antimicrobial properties
- Respiratory wellness — a premier herb for respiratory support in traditional European and North American herbalism; traditionally used to support healthy respiratory function and comfort during seasonal challenges
- Urinary tract support — traditionally used as a urinary tract herb; supports healthy urinary function and overall urinary tract wellness; a classic herb in traditional formulas for urinary health
- Healthy inflammatory response — rich in usnic acid and bitter compounds; traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response, particularly in the respiratory and urinary systems
- Lymphatic and immune tone — traditionally used as a lymphatic herb to support healthy lymph flow and overall immune system tone; a classic herb for deep immune support in traditional Western herbalism
How to Use
Tincture (strongly recommended): Usnea tinctures best in high-proof alcohol (60% or higher), which effectively extracts usnic acid and other key compounds. Pack a clean glass jar loosely with dried usnea. Cover completely with menstruum. Macerate 6–8 weeks, shaking daily. Strain well and bottle. This is the traditional and most effective preparation.
Important: Usnea does not extract effectively in plain hot water. A standard tea preparation will not deliver the same active compounds as an alcohol tincture. If you prefer a non-alcohol preparation, a glycerite or vinegar extraction is a better option than plain water.
Blending: Pairs well with echinacea and elderberry for comprehensive immune support formulas, or with uva ursi and marshmallow root for urinary tract support blends.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, dried usnea lichen retains its potency for 2–3 years.
Not recommended for long-term internal use at high doses. Usnic acid can be hepatotoxic in concentrated supplemental doses — use as directed and avoid high-dose concentrated extracts. Consult your healthcare provider before use if you have liver concerns, are taking medications, or are pregnant or nursing.
