Wormwood, Tea Cut (Organic)
Wormwood is one of the oldest and most storied herbs in the apothecary. Its Latin name, Artemisia absinthium, honors Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt and wild places — a fitting tribute to an herb that is intensely aromatic, fiercely bitter, and unmistakably powerful. It has been used in European herbal medicine for over 2,000 years, appearing in the writings of Hippocrates, Dioscorides, and Hildegard of Bingen. It is the herb that gave absinthe its name — and its legendary bitterness.
Our wormwood is certified organic, tea cut, and harvested at peak aromatic potency. Silvery-green, intensely bitter, and distinctively camphor-like — with a complex, resinous aroma that is immediately recognizable. Artemisia absinthium, true wormwood, not a substitute species. One of the most potent bitter herbs in the Western herbal tradition.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Digestive bitters & appetite support — wormwood's primary traditional use; one of the most intensely bitter herbs available, making it a classic digestive bitter; bitter compounds stimulate bile production, digestive enzyme secretion, and gastric acid — traditionally used before meals to support healthy digestion and appetite
- Liver & gallbladder support — a classic cholagogue herb; traditionally used to support healthy bile flow and liver function; a staple in European digestive bitters formulas alongside gentian, dandelion, and angelica
- Intestinal wellness — one of the most traditionally used herbs for intestinal parasite support in European and North American folk medicine; used by herbalists as part of comprehensive gut wellness protocols
- Fever support — traditionally used in European folk medicine as a febrifuge; used historically during febrile illness as part of supportive herbal care
- Aromatic & culinary bitters — used historically as a bittering agent in vermouth, absinthe, and digestive liqueurs; a key ingredient in traditional European aperitif and digestif formulas
How to Use
As a tea (use sparingly): Steep ¼–½ teaspoon of tea cut wormwood in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 5–10 minutes. Intensely bitter — start with a small amount and adjust to tolerance. Traditionally taken in small amounts before meals as a digestive bitter. Not recommended for long-term daily use — use in short courses of 2–4 weeks.
Tincture: Macerate in high-proof alcohol for 4–6 weeks. A small amount of wormwood tincture goes a long way — it is one of the most potent bitter herbs available. Traditionally used in digestive bitters formulas at low percentages alongside gentian, dandelion root, and orange peel.
Digestive bitters blend: Wormwood is a classic component of homemade digestive bitters — pairs well with gentian root, dandelion root, orange peel, fennel seed, and cardamom for a balanced, complex bitters formula.
