Yarrow is one of the oldest medicinal herbs on earth. Archaeological evidence suggests it was used by Neanderthals over 60,000 years ago — making it quite possibly the first herb ever intentionally gathered for healing. Its Latin name, Achillea millefolium, honors the Greek hero Achilles, who according to legend used yarrow to staunch the wounds of his soldiers on the battlefield. For millennia, across virtually every culture that encountered it, yarrow has been the herb you reach for first. It is a plant with a long memory, and a longer track record.

Our yarrow is cut and sifted aerial parts — the feathery leaves, stems, and flowers of Achillea millefolium, carefully dried to preserve its volatile oils, flavonoids, and bitter compounds. Pleasantly bitter and aromatic, with a complex herbal character that is unmistakably yarrow. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: yarrow is most commonly prepared as a tea or tincture. The bitter compounds and volatile oils extract well in both hot water and alcohol, making it a versatile herb for multiple preparation styles.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Seasonal wellness and fever support — yarrow's most ancient and celebrated use; a classic diaphoretic herb; traditionally used to support the body's natural fever response, promote healthy perspiration, and support recovery during seasonal illness; a cornerstone of the traditional fever tea trinity alongside elderflower and peppermint
  • Healthy circulation and cardiovascular tone — traditionally used as a circulatory tonic; yarrow has a long history of use for supporting healthy blood flow, vascular tone, and overall cardiovascular wellness
  • Digestive bitters and gut support — a classic bitter herb; traditionally used to stimulate digestive secretions, support healthy appetite, ease bloating and gas, and promote overall digestive comfort
  • Women's reproductive wellness — traditionally used to support healthy menstrual cycles, ease menstrual discomfort, and support overall reproductive tone; a key herb in traditional women's formulas for cycle regularity
  • Healthy inflammatory response — rich in flavonoids and volatile oils; traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response; a classic wound herb in traditional medicine worldwide
  • Urinary tract support — traditionally used as a gentle urinary tonic; supports healthy urine flow and overall urinary tract wellness

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted yarrow in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Pleasantly bitter and aromatic — blends beautifully with elderflower and peppermint for a classic diaphoretic fever tea, or with lemon balm and chamomile for a gentler everyday blend.

Tincture: Yarrow tinctures exceptionally well in high-proof alcohol. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle. A classic preparation for circulatory, digestive, and women's wellness support.

Blending: The classic fever tea blend — yarrow, elderflower, and peppermint in equal parts — is one of the most time-tested formulas in Western herbalism. Also pairs well with red raspberry leaf and cramp bark for menstrual support, or dandelion root and gentian for digestive bitters formulas.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted yarrow retains its potency and aroma for 1–2 years.

Not recommended during pregnancy — yarrow has uterine-stimulating properties and should be avoided during pregnancy. Those with known allergies to plants in the Asteraceae (daisy) family should use with caution. May interact with blood-thinning medications — consult your healthcare provider before use if you are taking anticoagulants.
