Yellow Dock has deep roots in both European folk herbalism and the traditional medicine of North American indigenous peoples, who recognized this humble roadside plant as one of nature's most reliable allies for the liver, blood, and skin. It is a bitter herb in the truest sense — not bitter as a flaw, but bitter as a virtue. In the old herbal tradition, bitters were the foundation of digestive and liver health, and yellow dock was among the most trusted. It has been used for generations as a spring cleansing herb, a blood tonic, and a gentle but persistent support for the body's natural detoxification pathways.

Our Yellow Dock Root is wildcrafted cut and sifted root — Rumex crispus, harvested from wild stands and carefully dried to preserve its tannins, anthraquinones, and iron-rich mineral content. Earthy and distinctly bitter, with a slightly astringent character. Wildcrafted and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: Yellow Dock is a root herb best prepared as a decoction — simmered rather than steeped — to fully extract its active constituents. It is traditionally used as a long-term tonic herb rather than an acute remedy, and is often combined with other liver and blood-supporting herbs for a comprehensive formula.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Liver and gallbladder wellness — one of yellow dock's most celebrated traditional uses; the bitter compounds in yellow dock root have long been used to stimulate bile production and support healthy liver function and detoxification pathways
  • Iron absorption and blood building — yellow dock root is naturally rich in iron and has traditionally been used to support healthy iron levels and red blood cell production; often combined with nettle leaf in traditional blood tonic formulas
  • Digestive support and regularity — the anthraquinones in yellow dock root have a gentle laxative action; traditionally used to support healthy bowel regularity, relieve occasional constipation, and stimulate sluggish digestion
  • Skin wellness — traditionally used as a blood and liver herb for skin conditions associated with sluggish elimination; a classic herb in traditional formulas for skin clarity and tone
  • Lymphatic and cleansing support — a traditional spring cleansing herb; used in folk herbalism to support the lymphatic system and the body's natural elimination pathways

How to Use

As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted yellow dock root in 8–10 oz of water for 20–30 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. Distinctly bitter — blend with licorice root, ginger, or cinnamon to balance the flavor.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with dandelion root and burdock root for a classic liver and digestive tonic formula, nettle leaf for a traditional iron and blood tonic blend, or cleavers and red clover for a lymphatic cleansing formula.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted yellow dock root retains its potency for 2–3 years.

Not recommended during pregnancy. Those with kidney stones, kidney disease, or taking blood thinners or iron supplements should consult their healthcare provider before use. Use with caution long-term due to anthraquinone content — best used in cycles.
