Astragalus has been a cornerstone of Traditional Chinese Medicine for over 2,000 years. Known in Chinese herbalism as Huang Qi — "yellow leader" — it has long been considered one of the most important tonic herbs in the entire Chinese materia medica, prized not for treating acute illness but for building deep, foundational vitality over time. It is the quintessential adaptogen of the Eastern tradition: not a quick fix, but a long game. In a world of instant remedies, astragalus is a reminder that some of the most profound support comes from herbs you take every day for months, not hours.

Our astragalus is cut and sifted root — the thick, fibrous taproot of Astragalus membranaceus, carefully dried and cut to preserve its polysaccharides, saponins, and flavonoids. Mildly sweet with an earthy, slightly woody character that blends seamlessly into teas and broths. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: astragalus root is traditionally used as a long-term tonic rather than an acute remedy. It is one of the great "simmer herbs" — add it to soups, broths, and stews and remove before eating, or decoct as a tea. Daily use over weeks and months is the traditional approach.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Immune system tone and resilience — astragalus's most celebrated use in both TCM and modern Western herbalism; traditionally used as a long-term immune tonic to build foundational immune resilience; one of the most researched herbs for immune modulation and adaptogenic support
  • Adaptogenic support and stress resilience — a premier adaptogen in the Chinese herbal tradition; traditionally used to support the body's healthy response to physical and emotional stress, promote sustained energy, and support overall vitality without stimulation
  • Cardiovascular and circulatory wellness — traditionally used in TCM to support healthy heart function, healthy blood pressure already within normal range, and overall cardiovascular tone; a key herb in traditional formulas for heart and circulation
  • Healthy aging and longevity support — one of the most researched herbs for healthy aging; traditionally used as a longevity tonic; modern research has focused on its telomere-supporting compounds as a mechanism for cellular aging support
  • Digestive and nutritive support — traditionally used in TCM to tonify the spleen and stomach; supports healthy digestion, nutrient absorption, and overall digestive vitality; a classic herb for fatigue associated with poor digestion

How to Use

As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted astragalus root in 8–10 oz of water for 20–30 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. Mildly sweet and earthy — pairs beautifully with ginger, cinnamon, or licorice root to enhance the flavor and deepen the formula.

Broth and soup method: Add a small handful of astragalus root pieces to soups, stews, or bone broth during cooking. Simmer for at least 30–60 minutes and remove the root pieces before serving. A traditional and delicious way to incorporate astragalus into daily life.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with reishi and schisandra for a comprehensive adaptogen formula, echinacea for immune support blends, or codonopsis and goji berry in traditional TCM tonic formulas.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted astragalus root retains its potency for 2–3 years.

Those with autoimmune conditions or taking immunosuppressant medications should consult their healthcare provider before use. Not recommended during acute illness — astragalus is a tonic herb best used between illnesses to build resilience, not during active infection.
