Irish Moss has been a staple of coastal life for centuries — harvested from the cold Atlantic waters of Ireland and the northeastern coast of North America, it sustained communities through hard winters and lean times long before it became a wellness phenomenon. In Irish folk tradition it was simmered into broths and puddings, prized for its deeply nourishing, gelatinous quality. In the Caribbean it became the base of a beloved tonic drink. And now, in the age of functional food and botanical wellness, it has found an entirely new generation of devotees who have rediscovered what coastal communities always knew: this is one of the most mineral-dense, nutrient-rich plants the ocean produces.

Our Irish Moss is wildcrafted whole thallus — Chondrus crispus, hand-harvested from the cold, clean waters of the North Atlantic and carefully dried to preserve its rich carrageenan content, trace minerals, and natural iodine. Mild, slightly briny, and deeply gelatinous when hydrated — it transforms beautifully into gel, smoothies, broths, and raw preparations. Responsibly wildcrafted and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: Irish Moss is most commonly soaked overnight, rinsed thoroughly, and blended into a smooth gel that can be added to smoothies, teas, soups, and desserts. The gel keeps refrigerated for 2–3 weeks and is one of the most versatile botanical preparations in the modern apothecary kitchen.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Mineral nutrition and nutritive support — one of the most mineral-dense sea vegetables available; traditionally used in coastal herbal traditions as a deeply nourishing food-herb; rich in iodine, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and a broad spectrum of trace minerals
  • Digestive and gut wellness — traditionally used to soothe and support the digestive tract; the natural carrageenan in Irish Moss has a demulcent, coating quality that has long been used to support digestive comfort and healthy gut lining integrity
  • Thyroid and metabolic support — a natural source of iodine, which is essential for healthy thyroid function; traditionally used in coastal communities where iodine-rich sea vegetables were a dietary staple and thyroid wellness was supported through food
  • Skin and connective tissue wellness — traditionally used topically and internally to support healthy skin; rich in collagen-supporting compounds and minerals that support healthy connective tissue, skin hydration, and overall skin wellness
  • Immune and respiratory support — traditionally used in Irish folk medicine to support the body during respiratory illness; the demulcent quality of Irish Moss has long been used to soothe and support the respiratory tract

How to Use

Irish Moss gel (most common): Rinse thoroughly, soak in cold water overnight (8–12 hours), drain and rinse again. Blend with fresh water until completely smooth. Store in a sealed jar in the refrigerator for up to 3 weeks. Add 1–2 tablespoons to smoothies, teas, soups, or desserts daily.

As a broth addition: Add a small handful of dried Irish Moss to soups or broths during cooking. It will dissolve and thicken the broth naturally, adding minerals and a silky texture. Remove any remaining pieces before serving.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with bladderwrack and burdock root for a classic mineral tonic formula, cinnamon and vanilla in smoothies and wellness drinks, or seamoss gel as a base for raw desserts and puddings.

Storage

Store dried Irish Moss in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, dried Irish Moss retains its quality for 1–2 years. Prepared gel should be refrigerated and used within 3 weeks.
