Black Walnut Hull | Cut & Sifted | Juglans nigra
Black Walnut has been one of North America's most respected medicinal trees for centuries. Long before European settlers arrived, indigenous peoples of the eastern woodlands used the hulls, bark, and leaves of Juglans nigra for a wide range of traditional purposes — from supporting digestive health to topical skin applications. The hull — the thick green outer casing that surrounds the walnut shell — is the most potent part of the tree, rich in juglone, tannins, and iodine. It is one of those herbs that serious herbalists keep in their apothecary not for everyday use, but for when it is specifically called for. Potent, purposeful, and deeply rooted in North American herbal tradition.
Our Black Walnut Hull is cut and sifted — Juglans nigra, carefully dried and processed to preserve its juglone content and characteristic dark color. Earthy, astringent, and distinctly tannic. Packed to order in small batches.
A note on preparation: Black Walnut Hull is a potent herb best used intentionally and in moderation. It is traditionally prepared as a decoction or tincture rather than a light infusion, and is most often used in short-term protocols rather than as a daily tonic. Always start with a small amount to assess tolerance.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Intestinal and digestive wellness — Black Walnut Hull's most celebrated traditional use; the juglone and tannin content has made it one of the most widely used herbs in traditional Western herbalism for supporting a healthy intestinal environment and digestive balance
- Healthy microbial and skin flora balance — traditionally used to support the body's natural ability to maintain healthy microbial balance, both internally and topically; a key herb in traditional cleansing and detoxification formulas
- Skin wellness — used topically in folk herbalism for centuries; the tannins and juglone in black walnut hull have a long history of use for supporting healthy skin tone and clarity
- Liver and detoxification support — traditionally used as a bitter herb to support healthy liver function and the body's natural elimination pathways
- Thyroid nutritive support — black walnut hull is naturally rich in iodine and has traditionally been used as a nutritive herb to support healthy thyroid function
How to Use
As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1 teaspoon of cut and sifted black walnut hull in 8–10 oz of water for 15–20 minutes, covered. Strain well and drink. Strongly astringent and bitter — a small amount of honey or cinnamon can help balance the flavor.
Blending: Pairs traditionally with wormwood and cloves in classic intestinal support formulas, pau d'arco and usnea for a comprehensive microbial balance blend, or yellow dock and dandelion root for a liver and digestive cleansing formula.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Note: Black Walnut Hull will stain — handle with care and store away from fabrics. Properly stored, cut and sifted black walnut hull retains its potency for 1–2 years.
