Butterfly Pea Flower has been treasured for centuries across Southeast Asia — in Thailand, Malaysia, and the Ayurvedic tradition of India — as both a ceremonial dye plant and a revered botanical tonic. Its vivid indigo blooms have colored rice, desserts, and ritual drinks for generations. Today, it has captured the imagination of the modern wellness world for the same reason it captivated ancient herbalists: that extraordinary, almost magical blue. Steep it in hot water and watch your cup fill with deep cobalt. Add a squeeze of lemon and watch it shift to violet and pink before your eyes. Butterfly Pea Flower is one of the rare herbs that is as beautiful to look at as it is beneficial to use.

Our Butterfly Pea Flower is whole dried flowers — the complete, intact blooms of Clitoria ternatea, carefully dried to preserve their vivid color and anthocyanin content. No stems, no filler, no artificial color. Just pure, whole flowers packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: Butterfly Pea Flower is naturally caffeine-free and makes a stunning solo tea or a show-stopping base for blends. Use it hot or cold — it cold-steeps beautifully overnight for a deep indigo iced tea. Add citrus (lemon, lime, hibiscus) to trigger the color-change reaction and shift the brew from blue to purple to pink.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Antioxidant support — rich in anthocyanins, the same class of potent antioxidant pigments found in blueberries and purple cabbage; traditionally valued as a protective and nourishing botanical tonic
  • Cognitive wellness and mental clarity — used in Ayurvedic tradition as a medhya rasayana (brain tonic); traditionally associated with supporting memory, focus, and overall cognitive vitality
  • Stress and nervous system support — traditionally used in Southeast Asian and Ayurvedic herbalism to support a calm, balanced nervous system and healthy stress response
  • Skin and hair wellness — the anthocyanins in Butterfly Pea Flower are traditionally associated with supporting healthy skin tone, collagen integrity, and scalp and hair vitality
  • Eye health support — traditionally used in Ayurvedic practice to support healthy vision and eye wellness

How to Use

As a hot tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of whole dried flowers in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 5–10 minutes. The longer the steep, the deeper the blue. Strain and enjoy as-is, or add a squeeze of lemon or a splash of hibiscus tea to watch the color transform to violet or pink.

Cold steep (highly recommended): Add 1–2 tablespoons of whole flowers to 32 oz of cold water. Steep overnight in the refrigerator for a stunning, deep indigo iced tea. Strain and serve over ice. Add citrus to taste and watch the magic happen.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with hibiscus for a color-changing blend, lemon balm and lavender for a calming evening tea, or mint and lemongrass for a bright, refreshing infusion. A natural fit for butterfly pea lemonade, blue lattes, and cocktail and mocktail applications.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, whole dried Butterfly Pea Flowers retain their color and potency for 1–2 years.
