Cloves, Whole (Organic)
Cloves are one of the most potent botanicals in the apothecary — and one of the most underestimated. Most people know them as a holiday spice, a background note in chai, the thing that makes mulled wine smell like winter. Herbalists know them as something else entirely: one of the highest antioxidant-scoring botanicals ever measured, a powerful warming herb with a long history in traditional medicine across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and one of the most effective natural sources of eugenol — a compound that has been studied extensively for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties. The clove in your spice rack is doing a lot more than flavoring your baked goods.
Our cloves are certified organic whole flower buds of Syzygium aromaticum — harvested at peak aromatic potency and dried to preserve their essential oil content. Intensely fragrant, warm, and slightly sweet with a characteristic numbing quality that signals the eugenol content is intact. If your cloves don’t make your mouth tingle slightly when you taste one, they’ve lost their potency. Ours haven’t.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Pain & discomfort relief — cloves have one of the longest documented histories of any herb for pain support; eugenol, the primary active compound, has been used in dentistry for over a century as a natural analgesic; traditionally used for toothache, headache, and general pain relief across multiple traditional medicine systems
- Digestive support — a classic warming digestive herb in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine; traditionally used to ease bloating, gas, nausea, and sluggish digestion; the warming, carminative action stimulates digestive secretions and supports comfortable digestion
- Antimicrobial & immune support — one of the most studied botanicals for antimicrobial activity; eugenol and other compounds in cloves have been researched extensively for their effects against a wide range of pathogens; traditionally used as a protective herb during illness and cold and flu season
- Anti-inflammatory support — exceptionally rich in antioxidant and anti-inflammatory compounds; among the highest ORAC scores of any botanical; traditionally used as a warming anti-inflammatory herb in blends for joint discomfort and systemic inflammation
- Respiratory support — a classic warming expectorant in traditional herbalism; traditionally used to support clear breathing, ease coughs, and warm and open the respiratory tract; a key ingredient in traditional respiratory blends across multiple cultures
- Blood sugar support — used in traditional medicine systems for metabolic support; modern research has explored cloves’ role in supporting healthy blood sugar levels, consistent with their long history of use in Ayurvedic medicine for metabolic conditions
How to Use
As a tea: Add 2–3 whole cloves to 8 oz of just-boiled water and steep for 8–10 minutes, covered, or simmer gently for 10–15 minutes for a stronger decoction. Intensely warming, spicy, and aromatic — a little goes a long way. Sweeten with honey and add a slice of fresh ginger or a cinnamon stick for a classic warming blend. Use an infuser or strainer — whole cloves are not meant to be consumed directly.
Blending: Cloves are a classic supporting herb rather than a primary herb — they add warmth, depth, and antimicrobial action to almost any blend. Pair with cinnamon, ginger, and cardamom for a warming chai-style blend; with elderberry and rose hips for an immune support formula; or with turmeric and black pepper for an anti-inflammatory blend. Use at 5–10% of a blend — cloves are potent and can easily overpower other herbs.
Infused honey or oxymel: Add a few whole cloves to raw honey or an ACV/honey oxymel for a warming, antimicrobial preparation. Cloves infuse beautifully into both and add significant depth and potency to any honey-based preparation.
Culinary: Whole cloves are a staple of global cuisine — use in mulling spices, pickling brines, braised meats, rice dishes, and spiced desserts. The whole form allows you to remove them before serving and preserves the essential oil content far better than pre-ground cloves.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Whole cloves retain their essential oil content and potency significantly longer than ground cloves — properly stored, they remain aromatic and potent for 2–3 years. If your cloves have lost their strong, immediate fragrance, they’ve lost much of their therapeutic value.
