Cornsilk is one of those herbs that surprises people — the silky threads most of us discard without a second thought when shucking corn have been used medicinally for centuries across Native American, Chinese, and European folk traditions. Long before corn became the world's most widely grown grain, Indigenous peoples of the Americas had already discovered that the delicate stigmas of Zea mays were among the most effective and gentle herbs available for the urinary tract. It is an herb hiding in plain sight — humble, unassuming, and quietly effective in the way that the best folk herbs always are.

Our cornsilk is cut and sifted — the dried stigmas and styles of Zea mays, carefully harvested and dried to preserve its flavonoids, saponins, and mucilaginous compounds. Pale golden, silky, and mild with a faintly sweet, grassy character. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

A note on preparation: cornsilk makes a pleasant, mild tea that is easy to drink daily. It is a gentle, food-like herb well suited to long-term use and blends beautifully with other urinary and kidney herbs.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Urinary tract wellness and comfort — cornsilk's most celebrated traditional use across Native American, Chinese, and folk herbal traditions; traditionally used to support healthy urinary tract function, promote urinary comfort, and support the body's natural urinary flow; one of the most widely used urinary herbs in the folk materia medica
  • Kidney and bladder support — traditionally used as a gentle diuretic herb to support healthy kidney function, promote healthy fluid balance, and support overall urinary system wellness; a classic herb for kidney and bladder support in both Native American and Chinese medicine
  • Demulcent and soothing support — rich in mucilaginous compounds; traditionally used to soothe and coat the urinary tract, ease irritation, and support healthy tissue integrity throughout the urinary system
  • Healthy fluid balance and mild diuretic support — traditionally used to support healthy fluid metabolism and promote gentle, healthy diuresis; a classic herb for water retention and healthy fluid balance in folk herbal traditions

How to Use

As a tea (most common): Steep 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted cornsilk in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Mild, slightly sweet, and pleasant — one of the more approachable urinary herbs. Drink 2–3 cups daily for best results.

As a tincture: Cornsilk tinctures well in alcohol or glycerin. Use a 1:5 ratio in 30–40% alcohol for a standard preparation. Glycerin extraction produces a mild, pleasant preparation well suited to sensitive individuals.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with marshmallow root and cleavers for a classic urinary soothing blend, dandelion leaf for a comprehensive kidney support formula, or uva ursi and juniper berry for a more robust urinary wellness blend.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted cornsilk retains its potency for 1–2 years.
