Dandelion is the most underestimated plant in the apothecary. Dismissed as a weed by most, revered as a medicine by herbalists for over a thousand years. Every part of the plant is useful — but the root is where the real depth lives. Earthy, slightly bitter, richly complex, and deeply nourishing to the organs that do the quiet, unglamorous work of keeping us well.

Our dandelion root is certified organic, tea cut, and sourced for quality. Dark, resinous pieces with that characteristic bittersweet earthiness — reminiscent of roasted chicory with a distinctly herbal backbone. Taraxacum officinale, harvested at the right time of year when inulin content is at its peak. Clean, potent, and exactly what a serious herb buyer expects.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Liver & digestive support — dandelion root's most celebrated traditional use; used across European, Chinese, and Ayurvedic traditions as a bitter tonic to stimulate bile production, support healthy liver function, and promote efficient digestion
  • Gentle detoxification — traditionally used as a spring cleansing herb to support the liver and gallbladder in processing and eliminating waste; one of the classic "blood purifier" herbs of European folk medicine
  • Kidney & urinary support — a mild natural diuretic; traditionally used to support healthy kidney function and fluid balance without depleting potassium (dandelion is naturally rich in potassium)
  • Prebiotic gut support — dandelion root is rich in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria and supports a healthy microbiome
  • Blood sugar balance — traditionally used to support healthy blood sugar levels; inulin content may help moderate post-meal glucose response
  • Coffee alternative — roasted dandelion root is one of the most satisfying caffeine-free coffee substitutes available; rich, dark, and deeply satisfying without the jitters

How to Use

As a tea (decoction): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of tea cut root in 8–10 oz of water for 10–15 minutes, then strain. Roots release their constituents better with gentle heat than a simple steep. Earthy, bitter, and grounding — pairs well with cinnamon, ginger, or a splash of oat milk.

Roasted coffee alternative: Spread tea cut pieces on a baking sheet and roast at 350°F for 20–30 minutes until dark and fragrant. Simmer as above. The roasting deepens the flavor dramatically — rich, dark, and genuinely coffee-like. Blend with roasted chicory root for an even more complex cup.

Tincture: Macerate in high-proof alcohol for 4–6 weeks. Pairs well with burdock root and yellow dock for a classic liver and lymph formula, or with milk thistle for a focused liver support blend.

Digestive bitters: Combine with gentian, orange peel, and fennel seed in alcohol for a classic aperitif-style digestive bitters. Take 1–2 dropperfuls before meals to stimulate digestive secretions.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, dried dandelion root retains its potency for 1–2 years.
