Some of the most powerful digestive herbs in the apothecary tradition are also the most humble — roadside roots, wild seeds, and woodland bark that healers have reached for centuries when the liver and digestive system needed gentle, reliable support. This blend brings six of those time-honored herbs together into a formula designed to work from multiple angles — every herb chosen specifically to thrive in a long, slow decoction, so nothing is wasted and everything works.

Dandelion Root and Milk Thistle Seed anchor the formula as the two most celebrated liver and digestive wellness herbs in Western herbalism. Fennel Seed and Ginger Root relax the digestive system, ease occasional spasms, and warm from within. Licorice Root soothes and supports the digestive tract lining while naturally balancing the bitterness of the hepatic herbs, and Burdock Root rounds out the blend with its traditional role in supporting the body's natural elimination pathways.

The Blend

  • Dandelion Root — The cornerstone of this formula and the premier liver and digestive wellness herb in Western herbalism. Traditionally used to support healthy bile production and flow, liver function, and overall digestive wellness.
  • Milk Thistle Seed — The most celebrated liver-supportive herb in Western herbalism. Traditionally used to support liver cell health, protect against oxidative stress, and support the liver's natural function.
  • Fennel Seed — Traditionally used to support healthy bile flow, ease digestive discomfort, and promote digestive ease. Adds a pleasant, subtle anise note to the cup.
  • Ginger Root — Warming and invigorating; traditionally used to support healthy circulation, ease occasional digestive discomfort, and enhance the action of the other herbs in this blend.
  • Licorice Root — Soothes and supports the digestive tract lining; encourages natural mucous membrane protection; balances the bitterness of the hepatic herbs with natural sweetness. Simmer-friendly and deeply compatible with this formula.
  • Burdock Root — A nourishing alterative root traditionally used to support the body's natural elimination pathways through the liver, kidneys, and lymphatic system. Rich in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports gut wellness.

How to Brew

Decoction Method (required for this blend): Add 1–2 tsp to 8 oz cold water in a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle simmer, cover, and simmer for 20–25 minutes. Remove from heat, steep covered 5 minutes. Strain well and enjoy. Best enjoyed 20–30 minutes before meals. For a more robust cup, use 1 tbsp.

This blend is formulated specifically for decoction — the roots and seeds require sustained gentle heat to fully release their traditional compounds. A standard steep will not extract them effectively.

For Extra Digestive Support: If you have a sensitive digestive tract, add ¼–½ tsp of Slippery Elm Bark to your cup after straining and while the tea is still warm. Stir well and enjoy.

Optional: add a pinch of dried peppermint leaf after straining for a bright finish. Caffeine-free. All organic. Small-batch blended by Bald Hill Botanicals & Apothecary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What herbs are traditionally used for liver and digestive wellness?
Traditional herbalism has long used cholagogue herbs — those that support healthy bile production and flow — to promote liver and digestive wellness. Dandelion root is the most celebrated cholagogue in Western herbalism; fennel and ginger support digestive ease and comfort.

What is milk thistle traditionally used for?
Milk thistle is the most celebrated liver-supportive herb in Western herbalism, traditionally used to support liver cell health and the liver's natural function. It is the essential partner to dandelion root — dandelion supports bile flow, milk thistle supports the liver that produces it.

What is a cholagogue?
A cholagogue is an herb traditionally used to support the production and flow of bile. Healthy bile flow supports fat digestion, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins, and the body's natural elimination of metabolic waste. Dandelion root is the premier cholagogue in this formula.

Why is Licorice Root in a liver and digestive wellness blend?
Licorice Root earns its place here as the blend's digestive protector. The bitter hepatic herbs in this formula — dandelion, burdock, and milk thistle — are powerful movers. Licorice Root works to support the gut lining, encourage the body's own natural mucous membrane protection, and soften the overall experience of the blend. It also naturally sweetens and balances the bitterness of the other roots — and handles a full decoction simmer beautifully.

Why does this blend require decoction?
Dandelion root, milk thistle seed, burdock root, and ginger are dense roots and seeds whose traditional compounds require sustained gentle heat to fully release. A standard hot steep extracts only a fraction of what a 20-minute decoction will.

Can I drink this every day?
Yes — formulated for daily use as a liver and digestive wellness tonic. Drink 20–30 minutes before meals for best digestive support. Please review the cautions below before use.

Is this the same as a liver detox?
This blend supports the liver's natural function and bile flow rather than a dramatic detox. Traditional herbalism views liver support as a gentle, ongoing practice — supporting the organ's natural processes rather than forcing a purge.
