Few herbs have earned their place in the modern apothecary as decisively as echinacea. Native to the North American prairie, it was the most widely used medicinal plant among the Plains tribes — employed for everything from wound care to snakebite to fever. European settlers learned its uses from Indigenous healers, and by the late 19th century it had become the best-selling herbal remedy in America. Today it remains one of the most researched and most purchased herbs in the world. Some herbs earn their reputation over time. Echinacea earned it over centuries.

Our echinacea is wildcrafted cut and sifted aerial parts — the leaves, stems, and flowers of Echinacea purpurea, harvested from wild-growing plants at peak potency and carefully dried to preserve its alkylamides, polysaccharides, and caffeic acid derivatives. Mildly bitter with a characteristic tingling sensation on the tongue — a hallmark of quality echinacea and a sign that the active compounds are present and intact. Wildcrafted herbs carry the full complexity of their natural environment, a character that cultivated crops cannot fully replicate.

A note on preparation: echinacea is most effective when used at the onset of seasonal illness rather than as a long-term daily tonic. Short, intensive courses are the traditional and most well-supported approach.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Immune system support — echinacea's most celebrated and researched use; traditionally used to support the body's natural immune defenses, particularly at the onset of seasonal illness; one of the most studied herbs for immune modulation in modern phytomedicine
  • Seasonal wellness and upper respiratory support — a premier herb for seasonal illness in both Native American and European herbal traditions; traditionally used to support the body during colds and upper respiratory challenges and promote faster recovery
  • Healthy inflammatory response — rich in alkylamides and caffeic acid derivatives; traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response, particularly in the lymphatic and immune systems
  • Lymphatic support — traditionally used as a lymphatic herb to support healthy lymph flow and overall lymphatic system function; a classic herb for swollen glands and lymphatic congestion in traditional medicine
  • Skin and wound support — one of the original uses among Plains tribes; traditionally used topically and internally to support healthy skin healing and tissue repair

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted echinacea aerial parts in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Mildly bitter with a characteristic gentle tingling — that tingle is a good sign. Blends well with elderflower, peppermint, and ginger for a comprehensive seasonal wellness tea.

Tincture: Echinacea tinctures exceptionally well in high-proof alcohol, which extracts the alkylamides responsible for the characteristic tingling sensation. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle. One of the classic tincture herbs.

Traditional use guidance: Most traditional and modern herbalists recommend using echinacea in short courses of 1–2 weeks at the onset of illness, rather than as a continuous daily supplement. Cycling on and off is the traditional approach.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with elderflower and yarrow for the classic fever tea trinity, elderberry for comprehensive immune support, or astragalus for a longer-term immune tonic formula.
