Elderberry, Whole (Organic)
Elderberry has earned its place as one of the most beloved herbs in the Western apothecary — and for good reason. Deep, dark, and richly fruited, these whole dried berries from the elder tree have been used across European and North American folk traditions for centuries as a cornerstone of seasonal wellness.
Our elderberries are certified organic, whole-dried, and sourced for deep color and full berry integrity — the hallmarks of quality fruit that hasn't been over-processed or adulterated. Rich, tart, and slightly earthy, with that unmistakable dark berry depth.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Immune wellness — elderberry's most celebrated traditional use; long used in European folk medicine as a seasonal immune tonic and first-line herbal ally
- Antioxidant support — deeply pigmented with anthocyanins, the same compounds that give the berries their characteristic dark purple-black color
- Respiratory comfort — traditionally used to support the body during seasonal respiratory challenges
- Lymphatic support — used in some traditions to support healthy lymphatic flow and glandular comfort
- Warming tonic — a classic cold-weather herb; traditionally prepared as syrups, elixirs, and warming teas throughout autumn and winter
How to Use
As a tea: Simmer (do not just steep) 1–2 tablespoons of whole berries in 2 cups of water for 15–20 minutes. Strain, sweeten with honey if desired, and enjoy. Simmering is key — it breaks down the berries and releases their full depth of flavor and constituents.
As a syrup: Simmer 1 cup of berries in 3 cups of water until reduced by half. Strain, cool, and stir in raw honey to taste. Store refrigerated for up to 3 weeks. A classic and deeply satisfying home preparation.
As a tincture: Cover berries with menstruum of choice and macerate for 4–6 weeks. Pairs beautifully with echinacea, ginger, and cinnamon.
Important: Raw elderberries should always be cooked or properly processed before consumption — heat deactivates naturally occurring compounds in the raw berry. Simmering, as in syrup or tea preparation, is sufficient.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. For extended freshness, refrigerate. Properly stored, whole dried elderberries maintain quality for up to 1–2 years.
