Elecampane is one of the great old herbs of European medicine — a towering, stately plant with broad leaves and bright yellow daisy-like flowers that has been cultivated in monastery gardens and cottage apothecaries for over two thousand years. The Romans called it Inula, and legend holds that Helen of Troy was gathering it when she was taken to Troy — hence the species name helenium. It was a beloved respiratory herb in medieval European herbalism, a staple of Ayurvedic practice as pushkarmool, and a key herb in traditional Chinese medicine. Few plants have earned such consistent respect across so many traditions over so many centuries.

Our elecampane is cut and sifted rhizome — the dried underground rhizome of Inula helenium, carefully harvested and processed to preserve its inulin, alantolactone, and essential oil content. Dense and woody, with a distinctly warm, camphoraceous, slightly bitter aroma that is immediately recognizable to anyone who has worked with this herb. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Respiratory wellness and lung support — elecampane's most celebrated use across virtually every tradition that has worked with it; traditionally used to support healthy respiratory function, ease respiratory discomfort, and support overall lung wellness; a premier herb for deep respiratory support in traditional European and Ayurvedic herbalism
  • Digestive support and gut wellness — exceptionally rich in inulin, a prebiotic fiber that supports healthy gut flora; traditionally used to support healthy digestion, ease digestive discomfort, and support overall gastrointestinal wellness
  • Immune support and natural defense — traditionally used to support the body's natural immune defenses; the sesquiterpene lactones have been the subject of significant modern research for their antimicrobial properties
  • Healthy inflammatory response — rich in alantolactone and essential oils; traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response, particularly in the respiratory tract
  • Warming and stimulating digestive tonic — a classic warming bitter and digestive stimulant in traditional European herbalism; traditionally used to support healthy appetite, digestive tone, and overall digestive vitality

How to Use

As a decoction (strongly recommended): Elecampane rhizome is woody and dense — it requires a proper decoction rather than a simple steep. Simmer 1–2 teaspoons in 8–10 oz of water for 20–25 minutes, covered. Strain and drink warm. The flavor is distinctly bitter, camphoraceous, and warming — blend with licorice root, ginger, or honey to balance.

Tincture: Elecampane tinctures beautifully in moderate to high-proof alcohol, which extracts both the water-soluble inulin and the alcohol-soluble essential oils and sesquiterpene lactones. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle.

Blending: A classic pairing with mullein leaf and thyme for respiratory support formulas. Also combines well with ginger and licorice root for warming digestive blends, or with echinacea and elderberry for comprehensive immune support formulas.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Properly stored, cut and sifted elecampane rhizome retains its potency for 2–3 years.
