Eyebright | Cut & Sifted | Euphrasia officinalis
Eyebright is one of those herbs whose common name tells you everything you need to know — and whose history is as charming as the tiny flower it comes from. Named by medieval herbalists following the Doctrine of Signatures — the old belief that a plant's appearance reveals its purpose — the delicate white flower of Euphrasia officinalis, with its purple veining and bright yellow center, was seen as a perfect image of the human eye. And so it was used, for centuries, as the primary herb of the European folk tradition for eye and sinus wellness. Five hundred years of consistent use later, serious herbalists are still reaching for it — especially during allergy season.
Our Eyebright is cut and sifted herb — Euphrasia officinalis, carefully dried to preserve its iridoid glycosides, tannins, and flavonoid content. Light, slightly bitter, and delicately aromatic. Packed to order in small batches.
A note on preparation: Eyebright is most commonly prepared as a hot infusion for internal use. It has a mild, pleasant flavor that makes it easy to drink as a daily tea during allergy season or periods of sinus congestion. It is also traditionally used as a cooled eyewash — though any topical eye application should be prepared with scrupulous care and sterile water, and we recommend consulting your healthcare provider before any topical eye use.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Eye wellness and comfort — Eyebright's most celebrated and historically consistent traditional use; used for centuries in European folk herbalism to support healthy, comfortable eyes; a foundational herb in traditional eye wellness formulas; particularly valued during allergy season and periods of environmental irritation
- Sinus and nasal wellness — traditionally used as an astringent herb to support healthy sinus drainage, reduce nasal congestion, and promote overall upper respiratory comfort; one of the most widely used herbs in traditional European formulas for seasonal sinus support
- Seasonal allergy support — a go-to herb in the traditional Western materia medica for seasonal wellness; used to support the body's healthy response to environmental triggers during high pollen seasons; pairs beautifully with nettle leaf for a classic seasonal support formula
- Upper respiratory wellness — the astringent tannin content supports healthy tone and drainage of the mucous membranes of the upper respiratory tract; traditionally used for catarrhal conditions and excess mucus
How to Use
As a hot infusion (tea): Pour just-boiled water over 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted Eyebright. Steep covered for 10–15 minutes. Strain well and drink. Mildly bitter and slightly aromatic — a touch of honey pairs nicely. Drink 2–3 cups daily during allergy season for best results.
Blending: Pairs beautifully with nettle leaf for a classic seasonal allergy support formula, elderflower and peppermint for a sinus and upper respiratory blend, or goldenrod and mullein for a comprehensive upper respiratory wellness tea.
