Ginkgo is a living fossil. The oldest surviving tree species on earth, Ginkgo biloba has remained essentially unchanged for 270 million years — outlasting the dinosaurs, surviving the ice ages, and enduring the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, where ginkgo trees were among the first living things to re-emerge from the devastation. It is one of the most studied botanicals in the world, and one of the most widely used herbs in both traditional Chinese medicine and modern Western herbalism. When a plant has been around this long, it has earned the right to be taken seriously.

Our ginkgo is certified organic, cut and sifted from the distinctive fan-shaped leaves of Ginkgo biloba — harvested at peak potency and carefully dried to preserve its flavonoid glycosides and terpenoids. Mildly bitter, slightly astringent, with a clean, green character. Ginkgo biloba — the maidenhair tree, one of the most recognizable and revered botanicals in the apothecary.

A note on preparation: ginkgo leaf is most commonly prepared as a tea or tincture. The active compounds are water-soluble, making a well-steeped infusion an effective and accessible preparation.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Cognitive function and mental clarity — ginkgo's most celebrated modern use; traditionally used to support memory, focus, and mental sharpness; one of the most researched herbs for cognitive support and healthy brain circulation
  • Healthy circulation — a premier circulatory herb in both traditional Chinese medicine and Western herbalism; traditionally used to support healthy blood flow to the brain and extremities, including the hands and feet
  • Antioxidant support — rich in flavonoid glycosides and ginkgolides; traditionally used as a tonic for cellular protection and healthy aging
  • Vision and eye health — traditionally used to support healthy circulation to the eyes and overall visual wellness; a classic herb for age-related eye support in traditional medicine
  • Energy and vitality — traditionally used as a tonic herb for fatigue and overall vitality, particularly in older adults; supports sustained mental and physical energy

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted ginkgo leaf in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Mildly bitter with a clean, green character — blends well with peppermint or lemon balm to soften the bitterness.

Tincture: Ginkgo tinctures well in high-proof alcohol. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle. A classic preparation for circulatory and cognitive support.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with rosemary and peppermint for a cognitive support blend, hawthorn for cardiovascular wellness, or gotu kola for a comprehensive brain and circulation formula.
