Goldenrod has a reputation problem it doesn't deserve. Every autumn, millions of allergy sufferers blame it for their misery — when the real culprit is ragweed, which blooms at the same time and spreads its invisible pollen on the wind. Goldenrod, with its showy golden plumes, is simply the one you can see. The irony is that goldenrod is actually one of the great anti-allergy herbs in the Western apothecary — a premier herb for the very symptoms it's wrongly accused of causing. Once you understand what goldenrod actually does, you start to appreciate the poetry of it.

Our goldenrod is certified organic, cut and sifted aerial parts — the leaves, stems, and flowers harvested at peak bloom and carefully dried to preserve its flavonoids, saponins, and essential oils. Mildly bitter, faintly sweet, with a clean, slightly resinous herbal character. Solidago virgaurea — one of the most versatile and underappreciated herbs in the North American and European apothecary.

A note on preparation: goldenrod makes a pleasant, mildly bitter tea that blends beautifully with other herbs. It is also an excellent tincture herb, with the flavonoids and saponins extracting well in both water and alcohol.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Urinary tract and kidney support — goldenrod's most celebrated traditional use; a premier urinary tonic in European and North American herbalism; traditionally used to support healthy kidney function, promote healthy urine flow, and support the body's natural cleansing processes; used extensively in German phytomedicine for urinary tract support
  • Seasonal wellness and respiratory support — traditionally used to support the body during seasonal changes; a classic herb for upper respiratory comfort, healthy mucous membrane function, and clear breathing
  • Healthy inflammatory response — rich in flavonoids and saponins; traditionally used to support the body's healthy inflammatory response, particularly in the urinary tract and joints
  • Antioxidant support — one of the most flavonoid-rich herbs in the North American apothecary; traditionally used as a tonic for cellular wellness and healthy aging
  • Digestive support — the bitter compounds in goldenrod support healthy digestion; traditionally used as a digestive bitter to stimulate digestive secretions and support overall digestive comfort

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted goldenrod in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10–15 minutes, covered. Strain and enjoy. Mildly bitter with a clean, slightly resinous herbal character — pairs beautifully with peppermint or nettle to round out the flavor.

Tincture: Goldenrod tinctures well in high-proof alcohol. Macerate 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Strain and bottle. A classic preparation for urinary and respiratory support.

Blending: Pairs beautifully with nettle and cleavers for a kidney and urinary support blend, elderflower and eyebright for seasonal wellness formulas, or dandelion leaf for a comprehensive kidney tonic tea.
