Horehound Herb, Cut & Sifted
Horehound is one of those herbs that feels ancient the moment you encounter it — and it is. One of the oldest recorded medicinal plants in human history, mentioned in the Egyptian Ebers Papyrus nearly 3,500 years ago and carried through centuries of European herbal tradition as a go-to remedy for the chest and throat. It was so trusted that horehound candy became a fixture in 19th century American general stores — one of the earliest examples of an herbal remedy crossing over into everyday life. Intensely bitter, unmistakably aromatic, and deeply functional. An herb that has never needed rebranding because it has never stopped working.
Our horehound is cut and sifted aerial parts — the leaves and stems of Marrubium vulgare, carefully dried to preserve its marrubiin, flavonoids, and volatile oils. Strongly bitter with a characteristic musky, slightly minty aroma that is entirely its own. Responsibly sourced and packed to order in small batches.
A note on preparation: horehound is a classic bitter herb best prepared as a decoction or tincture. Its bitterness is part of its medicine — resist the urge to sweeten heavily, though a touch of honey is traditional and pairs beautifully.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Respiratory and chest wellness — horehound's most celebrated traditional use; historically used in European herbalism to support healthy respiratory function, soothe the throat, and support the body during seasonal respiratory challenges; one of the oldest herbs in the Western respiratory materia medica
- Healthy expectoration and airway comfort — traditionally used as an expectorant herb to support the body's natural clearing of the airways; a classic herb for productive coughs and chest congestion in traditional European medicine
- Digestive bitter support — a classic bitter herb in the European tradition; traditionally used to stimulate healthy digestion, support bile flow, and promote appetite; one of the foundational bitter herbs in Western herbalism
- Throat comfort and vocal support — traditionally used to soothe and support the throat; the basis for the classic horehound candy and throat drop tradition that persists to this day
How to Use
As a decoction (tea): Simmer 1–2 teaspoons of cut and sifted horehound in 8–10 oz of water for 15–20 minutes, covered. Strain and drink. Intensely bitter — a small amount of raw honey is traditional and softens the edge beautifully. Pairs well with thyme, mullein, and ginger for a classic respiratory blend.
As a tincture: Horehound extracts well in alcohol. Use a 1:5 ratio in 40–60% alcohol for a standard tincture preparation. The bitterness extracts readily and makes for a potent preparation.
Traditional candy/syrup method: Decoct strongly, strain, and combine with honey or sugar to make the classic horehound candy or syrup — a time-honored preparation for throat and chest support.
Blending: Pairs beautifully with mullein and thyme for respiratory blends, elecampane and licorice root for chest support formulas, or gentian and dandelion root for digestive bitter formulas.
