Oregano, Whole Leaf (Organic)
Oregano is one of those rare herbs that lives with complete confidence in two worlds at once. In the kitchen, it is indispensable — the backbone of Italian and Greek cuisine, the herb that makes a tomato sauce sing and a roasted chicken unforgettable. In the apothecary, it is one of the most potent antimicrobial herbs in the plant kingdom, rich in carvacrol and thymol — the same volatile oils that make thyme so medicinally valuable, but in even higher concentrations. Most people have only ever met oregano as a dried flake in a shaker jar. Whole leaf organic oregano is something else entirely.
Our oregano is certified organic, whole leaf, dried at low temperatures to preserve the volatile oils that give it that characteristic bold, warm, slightly peppery aroma — intensely fragrant, deeply savory, and unmistakably Mediterranean. Origanum vulgare — one of the most aromatic and medicinally potent herbs in the entire apothecary.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Antimicrobial support — oregano's most celebrated medicinal use; carvacrol and thymol, oregano's primary volatile oils, are among the most well-studied naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds; used in European folk medicine for centuries to support the body's defenses against seasonal illness
- Respiratory wellness — a traditional European herb for respiratory support; used to soothe irritated airways, ease congestion, and support healthy breathing during seasonal challenges; pairs beautifully with thyme in respiratory formulas
- Immune support — exceptionally rich in antioxidants; oregano has one of the highest ORAC (antioxidant) scores of any herb; traditionally used as a winter wellness and immune tonic herb
- Digestive support — a classic carminative and bitter herb; traditionally used to ease bloating, gas, and sluggish digestion; oregano's volatile oils relax smooth muscle in the digestive tract and support healthy gut flora
- Culinary & aromatic — the foundational herb of Italian, Greek, and Mediterranean cuisine; essential in tomato sauces, pizza, roasted meats, vegetables, marinades, and herb oils; every culinary use is also a wellness use
How to Use
As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of whole leaf oregano in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 8–10 minutes, covered. Bold, savory, and warming — with a clean herbal depth that is immediately soothing. Add honey and lemon for a classic throat and respiratory support tea. Naturally caffeine-free.
Steam inhalation: Add a generous handful of dried oregano to a bowl of just-boiled water, drape a towel over your head, and inhale the steam for 5–10 minutes. A traditional European folk remedy for congestion and respiratory support — the carvacrol-rich steam is deeply clearing.
Oregano honey: Pack a jar with dried whole leaf oregano and cover with raw honey. Infuse for 2–4 weeks. A traditional antimicrobial and throat-soothing preparation — and a genuinely delicious culinary ingredient.
Infused oil: Cover whole leaf oregano with a quality olive oil and infuse for 4–6 weeks in a cool, dark place. Use as a finishing oil, bread dip, or topical preparation for minor skin concerns.
Culinary: Use in tomato sauces, pizza, roasted meats and vegetables, soups, stews, marinades, and compound butters. Add to herbes de Provence blends and Italian seasoning mixes. Whole leaf oregano is significantly more aromatic and flavorful than pre-ground — crumble between your fingers before adding to release the volatile oils.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Whole leaf oregano retains its volatile oils significantly longer than ground oregano. Properly stored, it maintains full potency and flavor for 1–2 years.
