Spearmint Leaf, Cut & Sifted (Organic)
Spearmint is one of those herbs that lives in two worlds at once — beloved in the kitchen and quietly powerful in the apothecary. Its bright, clean, cooling aroma is instantly recognizable, and yet most people have never considered it as anything more than a flavoring. That is a missed opportunity. Mentha spicata has a long and well-documented history of use in Western herbalism, Ayurveda, and traditional Mediterranean medicine — for digestion, hormonal wellness, cognitive clarity, and the kind of gentle, refreshing support that makes it one of the most pleasant herbs to work with in any format.
Our spearmint is certified organic, cut and sifted — vibrantly aromatic, bright green, with the characteristic sweet-cool scent that sets spearmint apart from its more intense cousin, peppermint. Mentha spicata — one of the most versatile and approachable herbs in the apothecary.
Traditionally Used to Support
- Digestive wellness — spearmint's most classic traditional use; traditionally used to ease nausea, bloating, gas, and indigestion; a gentle antispasmodic that supports smooth muscle relaxation in the digestive tract; well-tolerated and appropriate for a wide range of digestive complaints
- Hormonal & reproductive wellness — one of the most researched herbs for androgen support in women; traditionally used and studied for its role in supporting healthy hormone balance, particularly in the context of elevated androgens; a key herb in PCOS wellness protocols
- Cognitive clarity & memory — emerging research supports spearmint's traditional use for mental clarity, focus, and memory; rich in rosmarinic acid and antioxidant compounds that support brain health with consistent use
- Antioxidant support — rich in rosmarinic acid, flavonoids, and volatile oils; traditionally used to support the body's natural antioxidant defenses and overall cellular wellness
- Respiratory support — the cooling volatile oils in spearmint support clear breathing and ease mild respiratory discomfort; a traditional remedy for congestion and upper respiratory complaints
- Oral wellness — long used in traditional medicine for its antimicrobial properties and breath-freshening action; a natural complement to oral wellness routines
How to Use
As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of spearmint leaf in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 5–10 minutes, covered. Bright, refreshing, and naturally sweet — one of the most pleasant herbal teas in the apothecary. Enjoy hot or iced. Naturally caffeine-free. Beautiful on its own or blended with other herbs.
Tincture: Spearmint tinctures well in 80-proof vodka — the volatile oils and rosmarinic acid both extract effectively in 40% alcohol. Macerate for 4–6 weeks, shaking daily. Dose: 2–4 ml, 2–3x daily. A bright, aromatic tincture with a clean spearmint flavor.
Oxymel: Spearmint makes a lovely oxymel — its natural sweetness pairs beautifully with raw honey and apple cider vinegar. Macerate 2–4 weeks. A refreshing daily tonic preparation, particularly pleasant in sparkling water.
Culinary: Spearmint is a classic culinary herb — use in teas, lemonades, cocktails, mocktails, sauces, salads, and desserts. A natural pairing with citrus, cucumber, and stone fruits. One of the most versatile herbs in both the kitchen and the apothecary.
Blending: Pairs beautifully with lemon balm and rose petals for a hormone wellness tea; with nettle and red clover for a PCOS support blend; with chamomile and fennel for a digestive wellness tea; or with rosemary and ginkgo for a cognitive clarity blend.
