Tension doesn't always announce itself. It creeps in — a tightening behind the eyes, a stiffness at the base of the skull, a low-grade pressure that builds through the day until it's all you can think about. Tension Relief is formulated for exactly that pattern: the stress-driven, muscle-held, nervous-system-rooted headache that won't let go.

This is a botanical blend for nervous system calm, natural analgesic support, and circulatory ease — six time-honored herbs addressing the three core mechanisms of tension headaches simultaneously. Nervous system regulation. Natural salicylate support. Vascular and muscular ease. Every herb earns its place. Nothing redundant.

The Blend

  • Skullcap (Scutellaria lateriflora) — The nervine workhorse of this formula. Traditionally used to support nervous system calm, ease muscle tension, and quiet the stress-driven headache cycle. The anchor of this blend.
  • Meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) — Traditionally used to support healthy inflammatory response and ease occasional discomfort. Contains natural salicylates and has been used in traditional Western herbalism for centuries as a gentle analgesic herb.
  • Peppermint (Mentha × piperita) — Cooling and vasodilatory; traditionally used to support circulation and ease head tension. One of the most recognized herbs for headache support in both traditional and modern herbalism. Steep covered to keep the volatile oils in your cup.
  • Ginger Root (Zingiber officinale) — Warming and invigorating; traditionally used to support healthy circulation, ease occasional nausea, and enhance absorption of the other herbs in this blend.
  • Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) — A gentle nervine traditionally used to support relaxation, ease stress and anxiety, and calm the nervous system tension that underlies many headaches. Adds a bright, citrusy lift to the cup.
  • Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) — Traditionally used to support relaxation and ease tension. Aromatic and calming — as soothing to smell as it is to drink. Rounds the blend with a soft floral finish.

Flavor Profile

Bright and minty forward from peppermint, warming ginger heat, a citrusy lemon balm lift, and a soft lavender floral finish. Pleasant and approachable — one of the more drinkable medicinal blends we make. Honey recommended, but genuinely enjoyable without it.

How to Brew

Standard Steep (recommended): Add 1–2 tsp to 8 oz just-boiled water. Steep covered 7–10 minutes — keeping it covered is important to retain the volatile oils from peppermint and ginger. Strain and enjoy.

Drink at the first sign of tension or headache, and again 30–60 minutes later if needed. Yield: ~10–12 cups per ounce. Caffeine-free. Small-batch blended by Bald Hill Botanicals & Apothecary.

Pairs Well With

  • Calm & Collected — daily nervous system support (upstream stress layer)
  • Sleep & Restore — for tension that carries into the evening
  • Inflammation Ease — for headaches with a broader inflammatory component

Frequently Asked Questions

What herbs are traditionally used for headache support?
Traditional Western herbalism has long relied on nervine herbs — those that calm and support the nervous system — as the foundation of headache support, particularly for tension-type headaches. Skullcap and lemon balm address the nervous system root cause, while meadowsweet provides gentle natural analgesic support and peppermint offers the cooling, vasodilatory action that has made it a go-to headache herb for centuries.

What is the difference between a tension headache and a migraine?
Tension headaches are the most common type — typically described as a dull, pressing, or squeezing sensation around the head, often triggered by stress, muscle tension, poor posture, or fatigue. Migraines involve vascular changes and are often accompanied by light sensitivity, nausea, and visual disturbances. This blend is formulated specifically for the tension headache pattern. For migraine support, feverfew is the traditional herb of choice.

Why steep covered?
Peppermint and ginger both contain volatile aromatic compounds that are responsible for much of their traditional benefit — and those compounds escape in steam. Steeping covered keeps them in your cup where they belong. It makes a meaningful difference.

Is this blend safe to use daily?
This blend is formulated for occasional use at the onset of tension or headache. Meadowsweet contains natural salicylates — those sensitive to aspirin or salicylates should consult their healthcare provider before use.
