Thyme is the herb that lives in two worlds simultaneously — equally at home in a French bouquet garni and a traditional herbalist's respiratory formula. It has been cultivated around the Mediterranean for thousands of years, used by the ancient Egyptians in embalming, burned by the Greeks as temple incense, and carried by medieval knights as a symbol of courage. It is one of the most aromatic, most versatile, and most genuinely useful herbs in the entire apothecary — and it happens to make everything it touches taste better.

Our thyme is certified organic, whole leaf, and dried at low temperatures to preserve the volatile oils that give thyme its characteristic warm, earthy, slightly floral aroma. Intensely fragrant and savory — with that unmistakable Mediterranean depth that is equally at home in a roasting pan and a tea cup. Thymus vulgaris, true garden thyme, the most aromatic and medicinally active of the thyme species.

Traditionally Used to Support

  • Respiratory wellness — thyme's most celebrated medicinal use; thymol and carvacrol, thyme's primary volatile oils, are among the most studied botanical compounds for respiratory support; traditionally used across European herbal medicine to soothe irritated airways, support healthy expectoration, and ease dry, persistent coughs
  • Antimicrobial support — thymol is one of the most potent naturally occurring antimicrobial compounds known; thyme has been used in European folk medicine for centuries as an antimicrobial herb for respiratory and digestive wellness
  • Digestive support — a classic carminative herb; traditionally used to ease bloating, gas, and digestive cramping; thyme's volatile oils relax smooth muscle in the digestive tract
  • Immune support — rich in antioxidant flavonoids and volatile oils with significant antimicrobial properties; a traditional winter wellness herb across European folk medicine
  • Oral health support (topical) — thymol is the active ingredient in many commercial mouthwashes for good reason; thyme has been used in traditional European herbalism to support healthy gums and oral hygiene
  • Culinary & aromatic — one of the foundational herbs of French, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine; essential in bouquet garni, herbes de Provence, and countless savory preparations

How to Use

As a tea: Steep 1–2 teaspoons of whole leaf thyme in 8 oz of just-boiled water for 10 minutes, covered. Warm, savory, and deeply aromatic — with a clean, herbal quality that is immediately soothing. Add honey and lemon for a classic throat and respiratory support tea. Naturally caffeine-free.

Steam inhalation: Add a generous handful of dried thyme to a bowl of just-boiled water, drape a towel over your head, and inhale the steam for 5–10 minutes. One of the most traditional and effective respiratory support preparations in European folk medicine.

Thyme honey: Pack a jar with dried thyme, cover completely with raw honey, and infuse for 2–4 weeks. Strain or use unstrained. A classic European folk remedy for throat and respiratory support — and a genuinely delicious culinary ingredient.

Tincture: Macerate in high-proof alcohol for 4–6 weeks. Pairs well with mullein, plantain, and elecampane in a respiratory support formula.

Culinary: Use in roasted meats, vegetables, soups, stews, sauces, and marinades. Add to compound butters, herb oils, and vinegars. Every culinary use is also a wellness use — thyme is one of the rare herbs where the kitchen and the apothecary are truly the same place.

Storage

Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Whole leaf thyme retains its volatile oils significantly longer than ground thyme. Properly stored, it maintains potency and flavor for 1–2 years.
